Commerce Department has been the pioneer in the field of commerce education, having been in the fray for more than 40 years since 1976. With rich experience in the field of commerce education, the department has expanded its horizon to include apart from B.Com.(Aided), other streams like B.Com.(Banking & Insurance), B.Com.(Corporate Secretaryship), B.Com.(Computer Applications), B.Com.(Professional Accounting) and B.Com.(Hons) and M.Com. Each of these streams caters to the aspiration of students who want to take up a profession in Banking & Insurance, Company Secretary, Chartered Accountant, Entrepreneur or a career in the field of computers. The Commerce Department boasts of a 35-strong faculty team who are qualified with Ph.D. / NET / SET / ACS / MBA. The faculty team also includes professionals - a full-time Lawyer and a part-time Auditor to give practical exposure to the students. Each stream of Commerce has a dedicated team of faculty with specializations to handle the subjects.

1. Vibrant Curriculum & Valuable MoUs
Alignment of the curriculum with that of industry requirements is no longer an option, but a necessity. The department constantly holds discussions with industry experts to understand the latest trends and needs of the industry. Based on inputs from experts, a curriculum oriented toward Industry is designed focus on the employability of students. The curriculum is reviewed and updated frequently to meet the global standards.

The department has strengthened its foundation by having MoUs with prestigious institutions like The Institute of Cost Accountants of India(ICAI) and the Insurance Institute of India (III). The department also maintains good rapport with The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India(ICAI) for conducting programs, use of experts as resource persons, and making use of ICAI study material for B.Com Professional Accounting. MoUs with reputed institutes add value to the courses offered and the students are greatly benefitted by the experts from these institutes who are invited as resource persons for the seminars/conferences/workshops that are conducted by the department.

2.Scaling Up Skills
Skill, Re-skill & Upskill is the strategy used by the department to enable holistic development of students. Appropriate job-related skills complement a formal degree in any discipline and increases the career opportunities of students. The department has made it mandatory for all students to undergo a soft skills training programme. There is also a 'Communication Skills in Business' course unique to the department which familiarises the students with commerce and management jargon. Apart from this, Entrepreneurial skill training and Employability skill training are mandatory for B.Com.(Hons) students. The skill development programmes offered by the department helps to bridge the gap between education and employment.

3.Inspirational Industrial Visits (IVs) & Impactful Internships
Industrial visits are a way of life at the Department of Commerce. Such visits can make a significant difference for students in the understanding of how a business is run. Students are given a chance to witness everyday industrial realities such as manufacturing, processing and logistics. The department has made it mandatory for all final year students to attend IVs. B.Com(Honors) has an Industrial visit every year. The department has arranged IVs to companies in the Manufacturing and Service sectors, Stock Exchanges and also to reputed Educational Institutions like IIM Bangalore. Interactions with the corporate world help students gain practical knowledge. The department has arranged for Industrial Visits to companies in Chennai, Bangalore, Mysore, Goa, Kerala and Pondicherry to name a few.

Internships provide hands-on work experience to students which is invaluable and cannot be obtained in a classroom setting. The department has made it mandatory for all students (UG/PG) to undertake a summer internship of one month at the end of second year in a company of their choice. Internship forms an important part of B.Com(Honours) programme. The students take up phased internship in companies of their choice at the end of every year starting from 15 days(first year), 45 days(second year) and an intensive 10 weeks internship at the end of the third year. This rigorous internship programme equips students with the required employability skills to face the corporate world. All B.Com(Professional Accounting) students do an intensive one semester internship in a reputed audit firm.
