Why study Botany and Microbiology?

Plants are the foundation of all terrestrial communities and they dramatically affect the world’s climate, the global cycles of nutrients and water, as well as the lives of animals. The knowledge of Botany can be applied for the benefit of human nutrition, health, and to improve the sustainability of agriculture. As the population of people on earth continues to explode, the need to produce more productive crops and more nutritious foods will depend on the talents of botanists. Microbiology is a diverse discipline with almost limitless applications in health, industry, biotechnology, environmental science and basic research. With the increase in emerging infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance, the threat of bioterrorism, the rapid advances in biotechnology and numerous environmental problems, microbiologists are in higher demand than ever. Microbiology is a vast subject which overlaps with other life sciences such as genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology and even engineering. Both Botanists and Microbiologists can address the current environmental crisis and instill the spirit of stewardship in the minds of younger generation towards a sustainable future.
