       Outstanding achievements in science from time immemorial are always the result of such scientific imaginations, which has originated from the minds of scientists who had a passion towards the innate beauty of science. In recent decades, with the proliferation of scientific and technological information, scientists from different disciplines join hands to solve complex problems with an in-depth knowledge in their own discipline and a desire to learn from other disciplines. This is very evident from the many recent Nobel Prize winners in different fields who actually have a specialization in an allied field. Thus, preparing the teachers and students who have a quest for scientific pursuit in general and interdisciplinary research in particular, to address global problems (such as water sustainability, renewable energy, clean environment, and food security) becomes the prime responsibility of academic institutions.


       With this vision, The Centre for Nanoscience was established in Lady Doak College in the year 2011, to promote interdisciplinary research in the field of Nanoscience. The Centre offers M.Sc. Nanoscience Program with the financial support of UGC under Innovative Program Scheme- XI Plan from 2011 onwards. Lady Doak is the first among the affiliated colleges of Madurai Kamaraj University to offer such a program. The M.Sc. Nanoscience curriculum is first of its kind, incorporating an interdisciplinary approach (by merging all science disciplines) to understand this emerging and potential field. The course is designed in such way that it develops a passion in students to understand the science of small (Nanoscience) from on interdisciplinary perspective, through an interdisciplinary teaching by a team of teachers drawn from all the science departments of the college. The Nanoscience lab is equipped with specialized instruments such as Atomic Force and Scanning Tunneling Microscopes, Raman Analyser, Chemical Vapour Deposit Reactor, Electrochemical workstation and other relevant instruments to run the program. However, the infrastructure of the Nanoscience Lab is being upgraded with a dream to transform it into a hi-tech lab to carry out cutting edge research in basic sciences.
