About the BIF centre


• Established in Nov, 2006 at LDC
• Act as bioinformatics hub for the teachers and UG, PG, M.Phil and PhD students of various departments and nearby colleges and research institutes.
• Various projects were carried out from and using BIF centre.
• 41 computers (Under DBT-BIF: 26) with one high end server, one medium end server, fax machine, photocopier and printers along with scanner.
• Internet facility at a speed of 2Mbps leased line connectivity.

  • Biopolymer: PHA, Chitosan

  • Bioremediation: Chitosan

  • Medical microbiology:

  • a. Parasporin in cancer therapeutics

    b. Peptide inhibitors for controlling Dengue

  • Biodiversity of basidiomycetes

Major activities of the Centre

  • Organizing of seminars and workshops with hands on training.

  • To teach and train bioinformatics for students and research scholars.

  • Facilitated to promote research among the students and faculty from outside (ICMR institute, Madurai) and inside departments (Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Biotechnology).

  • Development of databases (MEDDB, DENvirDB).

Beneficiary from DBT-BIF centre

  • Bioinformatics Projects completed: PhD - 1; PG Diploma - 31; M.Phil - 13; PG -15; UG - 14; Miniproject – 4.

  • Students trained: 26 (studentship & traineeship)

  • 855 participants of college students, college teachers, school teachers, research scholars and scientists were benefitted.

  • Biotechnology, Computer science, Botany and Zoology departments are conducting regular classes on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics in the DBT - BIF Centre.
